You have a great message to share with the world. You have written your message, edited it, and practiced it for your Facebook Live or IGTV. You grab your phone, set it up, and shoot, only to watch it later and find out the video was dark and the quality was terrible.

Now your message is cloudy and you look unprofessional at best. Not only are you not impressing folks, but they’re distracted by the quality of your video so much so that they can’t properly see or hear your brand message.

These days, your online image is everything. Nothing makes someone turn off a video faster, unfollow, and forget all about you than terrible video quality. People consume information at a high rate. You only have 3-5 seconds to captivate your audience’s attention before they move on. Bad video diminishes your chances of a new listener hearing your message.

I get it, even as a professional doing at-home video, I have to do several takes to get it right.

If you’re looking to make some quick, easy improvements to your phone videos, here are a few tips:

  1. Let the sunshine in! One thing great video needs is light. Make sure you are recording facing a window with your phone propped up in front of you. Don’t sit with the window behind you or people won’t be able to see your face.

  2. Choose a background! Don’t sit in front of a plain wall - choose one that has some personality and make sure you sit at least 4 feet from it.

  3. Watch your head! Make sure you are close enough to the camera that all we see is from your shoulder’s up, but far enough away that there is a little space above your head. This will ensure we see just enough of you and that the camera will pick up your voice.

  4. Clean your lens! It sounds basic, but you’d be surprised what a mess not doing that can create an otherwise good video!

  5. Relax, Relate, Release! Take a deep breath and go for it! You got this!

These tips will save your online image and help you keep your following.
